Congratulations to our athletes who earned All-Conference recognition this season! The following athletes were recognized: Michael Bohlke (200 freestyle, 200 free relay, 400 free relay), Salvo Scata (50 free, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay), Andriy Grynyk (diving, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay), Luke Fote (100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay), Nick Jirku (200 free relay, 400 free relay), Wyatt Smith (200 medley relay), and Bryce Turner (200 medley relay).


Newington sees an incredible number of best times in CCC North Conference Championships Meet.
Newington ended the 2019-2020 season with many phenomenal swims while hosting the CCC North Championship Meet. The team finished 4th overall in a back and forth competition behind Avon, EO Smith, and Wethersfield. The medley relay team of Wyatt Smith, Bryce Turner, Salvo Scata, and Andriy Grynyk set the tone for the Indians to start the meet, dropping nearly two seconds to take second place with a time of 1:53.11. The 200 free relay team of Grynyk, Michael Bohlke, Nick Jirku, and Luke Fote picked up a third place finish with a time of 1:37.65, while the 400 free relay team of Scata, Bohlke, Jirku, and Fote also finished third with a time of 3:32.13. Bohlke was the top individual finisher for Newington with a first place finish and state qualifying time in the 200 free (1:56.36) and a fifth place finish in the 500 free (5:26.89). Team MVP Fote had best times in all of his events, despite not having started his end of season taper. He finished third in the 200 free (1:57.93) and second in the 100 free (51.71) bettering his state qualifying time from earlier in the season. Senior captain Scata had incredible performances, taking third place with a state qualifying time in the 50 free (23.80) and fourth place in the 100 free (53.29). He bettered the 100 free time leading off the 400 free relay to earn his second state cut of the night. Seniors Grynyk and Jack Prestage represented the team in diving, taking third and seventh place, respectively. Newington's remaining seniors all contributed point scoring swims including Jirku finishing sixth in the 200 IM (2:17.69) and seventh in the 500 free 5:36.62), Sean Vasi finishing ninth in the 200 free (2:05.18) and tenth in the 500 free, Eric Tran scoring in the 200 IM (2:31.25) and 100 fly, and Matt Montano scoring in the 100 breast (1:22.51). Smith took eleventh place in the 50 free with an impressive time drop (25.64) and fifth place in the 100 back (1:06.84), while Turner took sixth place in the 100 breast (1:12.95). Ben Berube picked up points in the 100 fly (1:18.78) and 100 back (1:10.81) and Arbi Shehu earned a point for the team also in the 100 back (1:11.76). Other best times for Newington included: Turner and Justin Wichowski in the 200 free, Montano and Dylan Correll in the 200 IM, Shehu, Prestage, Will Lubas, Dylan Moyer, and Eric Bierc in the 50 free, Grynyk, Bierc, and Jonah Borrup in the 100 free, Adam Gionfriddo in the 100 back, and Borrup and Ethan Olandt in the 100 breast.

Newington seniors perform well in loss to Berlin.
Newington saw many season best and lifetime best swims in their loss to Berlin. Sean Vasi had season best times in the 200 free (2:08.12) and 500 free (5:44.33) in his strongest performance so far this season. Nick Jirku dropped five seconds off his lifetime best in the 200 IM (2:28.70). Salvo Scata saw lifetime bests in the 50 free (24.43) and the 100 breast (1:14.47), and Luke Fote also saw a best time in the 50 free (23.97). Andriy Grynyk had Newington's sole first place finish in diving by more than 50 points (215.35) while Jack Prestage took third place with a best score of 147.15. Many swimmers competed in new events for the first time including Dylan Correll in the 200 IM, Ben Berube in the 100 fly, and Adam Gionfriddo in the 100 fly.

Newington sees strong performances from team captains in loss to Plainville.
Newington fell to a strong Plainville team, but had strong first place finishes from all three senior captains: Luke Fote, Andriy Grynyk, and Salvo Scata. The meet started off with a second place finish from the medley relay team of Wyatt Smith, Nick Jirku, Scata, and Grynyk (1:56.89). Fote (2:01.80) and Michael Bohlke (2:06.22) then saw second and third place finishes in the 200 free. Scata gave Newington a first place finish in the 50 free with a time of 25.13, while Jirku tied for third with a 26.40. Andriy Grynyk took first place in diving with a score of 203.95. Fote took first place in the 100 free by more than 4 seconds with a time of 52.62, while Bohlke took second place in a close 500 free race with a time of 5:50.75. Smith took second in the 100 back (1:10.64), while Bryce Turner took second in the 100 breast (1:16.25). Despite being behind in the meet, Fote led the 400 free relay team to a come from behind victory in the race along with Scata, Bohlke, and Jirku (3:48.44).

Newington swims well, divers shine in loss to strong Bristol team.
Newington came into this meet knowing they would be competing against a very strong team, but this did not prevent them from swimming hard and racing for best times. Michael Bohlke (2:05.44) and Sean Vasi (2:11.35) had strong performances in their first 200 free race of the season, taking first and third respectively. Senior captain Luke Fote then had a strong third place finish in his first 200 IM of his high school swimming career with a time of 2:20.68. Senior divers Andriy Grynyk (222.80) and Jack Prestage (142.00) were a very bright spot for Newington during the meet, both with lifetime best scores that earned them first and second place repsectively. Senior captain Salvo Scata then saw a lifetime best and a first place finish in the 100 fly with a 1:04.89. Fote then swam a very close 100 free race, taking second place with a lifetime best and automatic state qualifying time of 52.01. Wyatt Smith (1:08.43) and Bryce Turner (1:15.76) both had best times, taking third in the 100 back and second in the 100 breast respectively.

Newington opens the season with a win over East Catholic.
Newington began the meet strong with a close first place finish in the 200 medley relay with the team of Wyatt Smith, Nick Jirku, Luke Fote, and Andriy Grynyk (1:57.96). The Indians then took second, third, and fourth in the 200 free with Salvo Scata (2:09.91), Arbi Shehu (2:18.24), and Bryce Turner (2:20.13). Sean Vasi had a strong performance in the 200 IM earning second place with a time of 2:31.51. Newington then swept the 50 free with Fote (24.54), Michael Bohlke (26.24) and Jirku (26.25). During the diving portion of the meet, Andriy Grynyk had a state qualifying performance. Eric Tran dropped over a second off his lifetime best in the 100 fly to earn second place with a time of 1:15.10, and Fote (53.18) and Scata (56.55) took first and second in the 100 free. Bohlke then saw a come from behind victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:54.56. The 200 free relay team of Vasi, Grynyk, Bohlke, and Scata (1:47.06) earned another key first place finish for Newington. Smith took second in the 100 back (1:09.41) while Turner took first in the 100 breast (1:16.80), guaranteeing Newington's victory before going into the final relay. It was a great team win to start the season.
