Head Coach

Scot Wenzel (Bio)


Coach Wenzel began his head coaching career in 2000 at Mashpee High School in Massachusetts. In his first year at Mashpee he brought a team that had never been to the state tournament to the state semi finals. The following year Mashpee went back to the state semi finals again. In 2000 Wenzel was named the Massachusetts Boston Globe State coach of the year, and also the Cape Cod and Islands Coach of the year. Coach Wenzel coached a total of 4 years at Mashpee before stepping down to move back to his hometown of Berlin. 


In 2003 Wenzel was hired as the head basketball coach at Newington High School. He was the  head coach at Newington for 14 years from 2003-2017. During that time period Newington only missed the state playoffs once and Wenzel had a record of (187-122). In 2010 Wenzel was selected to coach the Senior All Star Game. In 2015 Newington recorded the schools only undefeated regular season going 20-0 and reached the state semifinals. While at Newington, Wenzel won a school record 4 conference championships (2004, 2015, 2016, 2017). Through the years Coach Wenzel coached 6 All State Players, 37 All Conference players, and 2 Academic All State players. Wenzel's career record is 226-169 (as of 2017).


In 2017 Coach Wenzel stepped down to watch his daughters play basketball in high school. Coach Wenzel loved his time coaching at Newington High School and always talked about how tough Newington kids are. When the head coaching position opened up in 2022 he jumped at the opportunity of coaching this storied program again. In 2022 Coach Wenzel won his 200th game at Newington and also recorded his 250 win of his career.
